Can Joe Thurston lure C.C. Sabathia to Red Sox? 12.06.08 at 10:14 pm ET
By Rob Bradford

OK, that’s not what this Ken Rosenthal article is about, but I just wanted to throw it out there. Joe Thurston, the utilityman who played in four games with the Red Sox last year, is C.C. Sabathia’s first cousin. Coincidence he played for the Sox the year before Sabathia becomes a free agent? OK, the answer is yes. Good times!

Rosenthal brings up some solid points when talking about a possible Sabathia to Sox match, but at the end of the day I just don’t see it transpiring. I think the stars have to align perfectly for the Red Sox to offer any kind of long-term deal to a pitcher (see Daisuke Matsuzaka), and with as many pitches as C.C. has thrown over the past few years (averaging a major league-high of 106.5 per game over the past three seasons) there appears to be just a few stars out of whack.

Best part: Let the WInter Meeting guessing begin, and this is a good start by Ken …

The best guess is that the Red Sox will end up with Teixeira and sign free-agent right-hander Derek Lowe, 35, to a short-term, high-dollar deal.

David Ortiz wants to make something clear to all reporters: If you want to break news you better attend his charity golf tournament. This year’s bombshell: Alex Rodriguez officially announced he will be playing for the Dominican Republic in the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

Best part: David Ortiz has a golf tournament.
