stanley-cup-finals-20091Welcome to the Wednesday edition of the LEEInks, or as it will be affectionately called today, the morning skate. After last night’s thrilling Game Six pitting the Red Wings and Penguins, it’s all about the best game you can name.

After a thrilling 2-1 win, Tyler Kennedy (1 G, 1A) and his Pittsburgh Penguins cohorts head back to Hockeytown for a Cup-deciding Game 7. Joe Starkey of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review gives his take this morning on last night’s thrilling win.

The Penguins couldn’t have done it without defenseman Rob Scuderi’s spectactular save in the waning minutes to help out goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. “I’m more of a stand-up goalie, not a butterflygoalie, I just blacked out,” Scuderi joked to reporters.

Pittsburgh came out firing on all cylinders after being flat-out embarrassed, 5-0, in Detroit on Saturday night. Mitch Albom of the Detroit Free-Press (not to mention Tuesdays With Morrie fame ) gives us all things Red Wings in the wake of the loss last night.

Simply put, this series for Pittsburgh has had a little bit of everything. The Penguins have had some flashy scoring, a few flying fists from finesse guys, and great goaltending (Scuderi’s save notwithstanding).

All this talk of Game 7′s brings to mind some pivotal Game 7′s held here in New England. Just recently, our beloved Black and Gold held one against Carolina, which to much dismay ended with series villain Scott Walker potting the series winner.

Who can forget the 1990 Adams Division Semifinal Game 7 win against regional rival (and Hurrcanes predecessor) Hartford? Frankly speaking, those awesome green jerseys and being able to drop the name Peter Sidorkiewicz are both worth the memory.

Friday’s Cup Finals finale, certainly isn’t the first in the sport’s history. 14 times, the Stanley Cup Finals have gone to the brink, 14 times, hockey fans have seen their fair share of on-ice excitement.

Former Bruin great Raymond Bourque was a part of a Stanley Cup Finals Game 7, as a member of the Colorado Avalanche in 2001. He even brought the Cup to Beantown, something that still hasn’t happened since 1972!

This blogger however remembers being a young puckhead watching the New York Rangers defeat Pavel Bure and the Vancouver Canucks in a Game 7. Of course the memorable part of that postseason is some guarantee by some Messier guy in the Eastern Conference Finals against New Jersey just a few weeks earlier.

It comes down to the 15th Game 7 for Lord Stanley’s Cup on Friday night in front of a rabid red-clad crowd at the Motor City’s Joe Louis Arena. After all, as Canadian folk singer and downright hero Stompin’ Tom Connors sang earlier in this very post, it’s the best game you can name.

Remember to keep your skates sharpened, stick on the ice, and stay classy, New England!
