By Jerry Spar

Welcome to Friday’s Morning Mashup, where we’ll get you caught up on what’s going on in the sports world and beyond.

FOOTBALL: Kirk Minihane writes about the Patriots’ receiving duo of Randy Moss and Wes Welker.

The Broncos ended their four-game skid by beating the Giants. The Cowboys rolled past the Raiders. The Packers pasted the Lions.

Third-ranked Texas held off Texas A&M in a high-scoring thriller. Dan Hawkins will stay on as Colorado coach because the school can’t afford to buy him out.

BASEBALL: Shortstop Alex Gonzalez left the Red Sox to sign with the Blue Jays.

Bob Sheppard, who is 99 years old, is done being the public address announcer for the Yankees.

BASKETBALL: Paul Flannery talks to the Celtics about Allen Iverson’s retirement plans and notes that the guard still could return.

Dwight Howard and the Magic handed the Hawks their first home loss. Carlos Boozer dominated as the Jazz bounced the Bulls.

No. 22 Minnesota turned away No. 12 Butler. No. 15 Michigan beat Creighton in overtime. Texas A&M knocked off No. 19 Clemson. No. 25 Oklahoma suffered its third straight loss, this one to Houston. UCLA was routed by Portland, despite the return of forward Nikola Dragovic after a two-game suspension.

HOCKEY: The Senators edged the Blue Jackets.

ON THIS DAY TRIVIA: On Nov. 27, 1950, the Red Sox signed which former Indians player/manager to be an infielder for them?

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “Well, money is always a consideration in big-time college football.” — University of Colorado athletic director Mike Bohn, asked if he’s keeping on coach Dan Hawkins because the school can’t afford to buy out his contract after a 16-32 record in four seasons

STAT OF THE DAY: 4-0 — The Cowboys’ record on Thanksgiving Day with Tony Romo at quarterback

‘NET RESULTS: Six women have dunked in a college game before (at least according to what’s on the web), but I’ve only seen it done on breakaways. To me, this is more impressive. Then again, Baylor freshman Brittney Griner is 6-foot-8 (and allegedly still growing), so she’s got an advantage.

TRIVIA ANSWER: Lou Boudreau, who played for the Sox in 1951, became player/manager for the 1952 season and just managed for the following two years.

SOOTHING SOUNDS: Jimi Hendrix, who died in 1970, would have been 67 today.
