FOOTBALL: Chris Price has Part 2 of his Patriots roster ranking. D.J. Bean continues his early draft analysis with a look at safeties. Linebacker Junior Seau retired (again).

Titans running back Chris Johnson was named AP Offensive Player of the Year. The Chiefs hired Romeo Crennel as defensive coordinator. Redskins offensive line coach Joe Bugel retired.

Lane Kiffin was introduced at USC, and promised to run a clean program.

BASKETBALL: The Celtics demolished the Nets. Paul Flannery has the Three-Pointer of Things We Learned. Doc Rivers was fined $25,000 for his Monday blowup.

The Clippers jinx continues, as top draft pick Blake Griffin will have season-ending knee surgery. A hurting Kobe Bryant led the Lakers past the Mavericks. The Rockets beat the Mavericks in three overtimes. The Nuggets knocked off the Magic. The Pacers rallied from 24 points down to beat the Suns. The Spurs edged the Thunder in overtime.

Boston College lost to Duke due to a disastrous second half. No. 15 UConn fell to No. 16 Pitt. No. 24 Clemson handled No. 12 North Carolina.

HOCKEY: The Bruins lost to the Ducks. Graig Woodburn has the Hat Trick of Things We Learned.

The Capitals rallied from three goals down to beat the Panthers. Sidney Crosby and the Penguins beat the Flames. Canucks forward Alex Burrows was fined $2,500 for his accusations of biased refereeing. Oilers goalie Nikolai Khabibulin is scheduled to have surgery today on his back and will miss about 12 weeks.

BASEBALL: Alex Speier has a look at Red Sox prospect Jose Iglesias. Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran had knee surgery and will miss the start of the season. Reliever Joel Zumaya and the Tigers avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to a one-year deal. Major League Baseball will discuss expanded instant replay.
