Bad fan behavior is nothing new, but at West Virginia basketball games, it’s becoming an embarrassment. A month after a university official wrote a letter to students asking them to limit their use of profanities, fans of the Mountaineers struck again. Literally. During Wednesday night’s “Backyard Brawl” victory over Pittsburgh, fans threw objects on the court, and Pitt assistant (and Bay State native) Tom Herrion was hit in the face by a coin. And this occurred despite WVU coach Bob Huggins taking the microphone and pleading fans to point out offenders.
Here’s the incident, which makes the Pitt TV analyst irate.
WVU president Jim Clements apologized to Pittsburgh Thursday and promised increased security at future games. “Boorish and unruly behavior by our fans will not be tolerated,” he said.
