♦ In the Chicago Tribune, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen had some interesting things to say about umpire Joe West after getting tossed in Wednesday’s game. Among them: “He’s a [bleeping bleep], that’s what he is.” And: “Joe has been like that for a lot of years, and he’s always going to be like this. I’m not going to change it, nobody is going to change it, but sometimes he thinks [bleeping] people pay to watch him [bleeping] umpire.”
Here’s the second of two balk calls that led to pitcher Mark Buehrle’s ejection. Guillen was tossed after the first balk call.
♦ In the New York Post, Bart Hubbuch writes about South Florida complaining that New York/New Jersey was given the 2014 Super Bowl, with one official telling reporters, “The fix was in for New York.” The Post also has a notebook that examines what would happen in the case of a blizzard, and how the halftime show might be affected.
♦ Jason Whitlock in the Kansas City Star looks at the University of Kansas’ ticket scandal and writes that the NCAA breeds a culture of corruption.
♦ Filip Bondy in the New York Daily News writes that U.S. soccer coach Bob Bradley is gambling with his World Cup roster as the team lacks proven offensive players.
♦ ESPN ombudsman Don Ohlmeyer writes about the danger of anonymous sources and examines the Jeff Ireland-Dez Bryant “prostitute” controversy.
