If Red Sox catcher Victor Martinez were to leave the organization in pursuit of free agency and a bigger contract, the Sox are expected to be aggressive in their attempts to sign catcher John Buck, a member of the Blue Jays this past season, ESPN reports.
Buck was an All-Star this past season, his first selection to the team in his career. He hit 20 home runs, tying Martinez on the season, with a .266 batting average and an OPS upwards of .800. Buck threw out 28 percent of baserunners from behind the plate.
The Red Sox expect the Tigers to make a heavy push for Martinez, and said that it is “likely” he will sign elsewhere, according to several baseball sources.
