Yankees: Derek Jeter ‘allowed to test the market’ |

Yankees president Randy Levine weighed in on the Derek Jeter negotiations Wednesday, complimenting the shortstop but also noting that he’s benefited from playing with some stellar teams in New York during his career.
“All I can say is we think he’s a great Yankee, we think he’s been a great Yankee and we’ve been great for him and this is the best place for him,” Levine said. “But he’s a free agent and he’s allowed to test the market and do whatever he wants.”
Levine said he expects that general manager Brian Cashman to have further discussions with Jeter, as well as free agent pitcher Cliff Lee, this week.
Levine indicated he understands the intangibles Jeter brings to the team, but the executive made it clear the Yankees have to watch the bottom line. Jeter, coming off a 10-year, $189 million deal, is 36 and just finished the worst season of his career.
“He’s a baseball player,” Levine said. “It’s a player negotiation. Everything he is and who he is gets factored in. But this isn’t a licensing deal or a commercial rights deal. He’s a baseball player.
“But with that said, you can’t take away from who he is. He brings a lot to the organization and we bring a lot to him. … Derek Jeter is a great Yankee, a great player. That said, now is a different negotiation than 10 years ago.”

Randy Levine is just a tool! He has no idea what it takes to stay at the top of his profession like Derek has. Randy Levine does not make money for the Yankees, like Derek does. I remember when Mantle wanted a raise to $100k, and the Yanks played hardball with him. The fans did not take kindly to them for it. Mantle got what he wanted. Derek is worth what he wants, the intangibles that he brings to the Yanks. Levine is going to push, and in the end, his messing around will be bad PR for them. This is one player, along with Mo, that they should not mess with. These guys have given their all for many, many years, the Yankee front office should back off, like they said. But again, Levine is a tool.

Jeter is not the Jeter of my father. Sorry to say, He should bow out”Jim Brown” style before he embarresses himself.

Derek Jeter is just a glorified “Yankee” player. He’s been overrated throughout his career, they keep awarding him gold gloves (5) even though he doesn’t even deserve one. If he was a true team player he would’ve let A-Rod play short stop and taken over third base. It’s amazing how he has these ‘guyrating’ motions when he’s in the batter’s box, as if to coax the umpire’s call of whether it’s a ball or strike. I will give him credit for being a career .300 hitter, but his other achievements are all because of longevity. As far as World Series rings, they are won as a team and many “Yankee” players have won many. Nobody is worth just what they want, but at least Mantle was a true ‘Super Star’. Jeter is not a ‘Super Star’.

It would be AMAZING to see Jeter get his 3000th hit as a member of the Red Sox. He’s only 74 hits away.

They sign f^%$ing girardi to 3 years and let a 5 ring captain walk !
He doesn’t deserve the same pay he has been receiving, but he definitely doesn’t deserve to be treated like a freaken stiff.
This is the work of uday and qusay…

The Yankees are too smart and will sign him.If the Sox ever had a chance I would sign him a great leader rarely misses any time.He also has alot of World Series experience and once he was here the fans would love him a real winner.
