♦ The Masters golf tournament, which has previously been criticized for its treatment of women, insisted an incident in which two female reporters were barred from the players’ locker room Sunday was a mistake. The women were with with a group of reporters following Rory McIlroy when they told by a female security guard that women were not allowed into the locker room, where McIlroy was being interviewed.
“The security guard told me women were not allowed in because it was open shower area,” said Tara Sullivan, a columnist for The Record of Bergen, N.J. “I told her, ‘Just like every other locker room. I’ve been in.’ ”
Masters personnel later acknowledged the error. “It should not have happened,” said Steve Ethun, a spokesman for Augusta National (which has no female members). “We will work as hard as we can to make sure it does not happen again.”
♦ A youth football coach in the San Diego area was arrested Saturday on suspicion of felony battery after allegedly assaulting a parent of another team. Coach Saivaauli Savaiinea claims to have overheard Mark Cannon trying to recruit one of his top players after a game between their teams, and during the dispute at Abraham Lincoln High School the parent was kicked and punched and knocked unconscious when he tripped and hit his head on the ground. Cannon was taken to the emergency room while Savaiinea was taken to jail.
♦ In The Los Angeles Times, Bill Shaikin looks at the small-market problems of the Padres, who might be the only major professional team in San Diego if the Chargers move to Los Angeles.
