LEEInks list: Biting incidents in sports 06.02.11 at 12:18 pm ET

Alexandre Burrows appeared to bite Patrice Bergeron during Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals. Although it was dirty, it has not been the only biting incident in sports, especially in hockey. Here is a list of 10 biting occurrences in sports.

10. Senators Jarkko Ruutu bites Sabres Andrew Peters

In January of 2009, Ruutu and Peters got engaged in a fight. Peters’ hands ended up in Ruutu’s face and that is when Ruutu bit down on Peters’ hand. He was suspended two games.

9. Robert Horry bites Jerry Stackhouse

In 2006, Horry, a Lakers forward and Stackhouse, a Mavericks forward were involved in a confrontation on the court. The two were battling for a rebound and got tangled. The Mavericks said that Horry bit Stackhouse on the arm. Horry was suspended two games for the accident, but denied that he actually bit Stackhouse.

8. Luis Suárez of the Amsterdamsche Football Club was suspended for two matches after biting an opponent

In 2010, Ajax captain Luis Suárez bit PSV Eindhoven’s Otman Bakkal on the shoulder in a match between the two teams. He was suspended for two games and fined an undisclosed amount. The fine would be donated to charity the team said.

7. Mike Tyson bites Kevin McBride

The incident occurred during a fight between the two in 2005.“Tyson is still crazy. He bit my nipple! I didn’t realize it at first, but he had his teeth around it,” McBride told a British tabloid. “I just felt a strange sensation and then realized what he’d done.” McBride won on a TKO in the sixth round.

6. Jermaine Defoe bites Javier Mascherano in a Premier League game

In 2006, Defoe bit Mascherano’s arm in a Premier League game. The incident started a 20-man brawl between the two squads and a lot of criticism. “To receive a bite was the worst thing that has happened to me,” Mascherano said. “Things weren’t going well for me, but this was unexpected and outrageous.”

5. Newcastle Cobras defender bites referee

Newcastle Cobras defender Rob McCaig, of the British hockey league bit a referee in 1997. He was suspended for four months and fined 1,000 pounds. He was originally suspended five games for roughing and gross misconduct for physical abuse of an official, but then officials reviewed the tape and determined that he bit the referee and there should be a more harsh punishment.

4. Flyers defenseman Derian Hatcher bites Devils forward Travis Zajac

The incident occurred in a 2008 game between the Flyers and the Devils. “I guess I got close to him and he bit me,” said Zajac, who wore a splint on the middle finger of his left hand. “I felt pain, I saw blood and then got stitched up and went back out.” Hatcher denies that he bit Zajac. “If he’s cut, good. But I didn’t bite him,” Hatcher said.

3. Flyers forward Daniel Carcillo says Bruins center Marc Savard bit him

The accusation occurred after Game Two of the Eastern Conference finals between the Flyers and the Bruins. It was said to have happened in the second period after a the two exchanged words after a whistle. “Last time I have been bit was in grade school. It’s not a good feeling. … Guys don’t bite. Men don’t bite,” Carcillo said.

2. Danny Ainge vs. Tree Rollins

The two players found themselves tangled up on the court in 1983 in a first round playoff series. The two were wrestling and throwing shots left and right at each other. The fight escalated to another level when Ainge was bit by Tree Rollins.

1. Mike Tyson bites Evander Holyfield

In 1997, the two boxers fought for the second time in their careers and in the third round Tyson bit a piece off of Holyfield’s right ear. Tyson was not disqualified immediately. Following that, Tyson appeared to bite Holyfield’s left ear and at that point Tyson was disqualified for good. As a result he was fined $3 million and had his boxing license revoked by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
