| Patriots DL Gerard Warren, other NFL players could be disciplined for involvement with Alabama gaming center | 06.17.11 at 10:26 am ET |
Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports reported Thursday that at least 25 NFL players, including Patriots defensive lineman Gerard Warren, Bengals wide receiver Terrell Owens and former Patriot Adalius Thomas, might face discipline from the league for investing in Center Stage, a bingo and entertainment center near Dothan, Ala., that will re-open in late June or July.
Cole wrote that the players involved had invested approximately $20 million in the center, which was previously known as Country Crossing. The center was shut down in February 2010 for using illegal slot-machine lookalikes. Developer Ronnie Gilley plead guilty to 10 counts of corruption and went on trial last week.
The NFL cannot discipline the players during the lockout, Cole wrote, but could start a formal investigation once a new collective bargaining agreement is reached.
Cole wrote that if the players are found guilty, disciplinary action could range from a fine to suspension to forced divestment, which could cost some players upwards of $1 million.
