Tiger Woods will miss next week’s British Open at Royal St. George’s in England, the former No. 1 golfer in the world announced on his own website (TigerWoods.com) Tuesday morning.
The three-time Open winner will miss his second straight major with injuries to his left leg. He suffered a Grade 1 MCL sprain on his left knee and another strain to his Achilles tendon to the same side during the Masters back in April. He had attempted a comeback during The Players Championship in early May but withdrew after only nine holes because of the injuries. Woods also missed last week’s AT&T National.
“In hindsight, I probably shouldn’t have competed at THE PLAYERS, but it’s a big event, and I wanted to be there to support the tour,” Woods said on his site. “I’ve got to learn from what I did there and do it right this time and not come back until I’m ready.”
Woods has not won a major since he won the 14th of his career at the 2008 U.S. Open. The PGA Championship is the only remaining major left on the 2011 schedule for Woods and will be played from Aug. 11-14.
