♦ George Kimball, a Boston Herald sports columnist and boxing writer from 1980-2005, died Wednesday night at 67 after a six-year battle with cancer. Kimball was diagnosed in 2005, four months after retiring from the Herald. Kimball authored and edited several books about boxing, and he continued to contribute boxing articles to the Herald after his retirement. In the Herald, Michael Gee writes an appreciation of his former colleague.
♦ A firefighter attending Thursday’s Rangers game with his young son died after falling over an outfield railing while catching a ball tossed to him by outfielder Josh Hamilton. At Yahoo! Sports, Jeff Passan writes about the tragedy and how it hits home for him.
♦ The Royals are planning a tribute to the Negro Leagues and the legendary Buck O’Neil Saturday, but they decided not to wear replica uniforms, reportedly because they cost too much (between $15,000 and $20,000). ♦ Former Bruins assistant coach Craig Ramsay, who was head coach of the Thrashers last season, complained to the Winnipeg Sun that the team’s new owners left him and his staff in limbo for weeks after buying the team and moving it to Winnipeg. Ramsay eventually took a job as an assistant with the Panthers after the Jets hired Claude Noel as their new head coach.
