| Tom Lewis sets round record for amateurs at British Open | 07.14.11 at 3:39 pm ET |
The biggest part of 20-year-old Tom Lewis‘s day was supposed to be that he was playing in the British Open alongside the very man his parents named him after: the living legend Tom Watson.
But the day became even more memorable when the amateur hit four straight birdies on holes 14-17 and finished the day with a five-under 65 to put him in a tie with Thomas Bjorn for the lead after the first round of The Open Championship at Royal St. George’s.
Lewis’s round was the lowest ever by an amateur at the British Open, besting the marks of 66 by Frank Stranahan (1950), Tiger Woods (1996) and Justin Rose (1998) by one stroke. He is also the first amateur to lead a round at any major since 1976.
For more on Lewis’s day, check out the story by the Associated Press, which includes reactions from Lewis, Bjorn and even Watson.
