♦ Trevor Gretzky, son of NHL legend Wayne Gretzky, signed with the Cubs after deciding to pass up an offer to play baseball at San Diego State. The younger Gretkzy, who played high school baseball and football in Southern California, is a 6-foot-4, 180-pounder who was selected in the seventh round of the June draft.
San Diego State coach (and former Padres star) Tony Gwynn said he had an idea he might lose Gretzky to the pros. “Wayne mentioned how he started his pro career as a 17-year-old, how if you work hard enough you can make it,” Gwynn said. “The father is a nice guy. He totally gets it, understands the pro game. And the son is very mature.”
♦ Hall of Fame announcer Mike “Doc” Emrick, who called the Bruins’ Stanley Cup victory for NBC and Versus, announced plans to end his tenure as play-by-play voice of the Devils after 21 years. Emrick will continue his national work but expressed a desire to limit his workload as he closes in on his 65th birthday.
♦ Lakers center Andrew Bynum has been taking some heat since photos were distributed of his convertible parked across two handicapped parking spots at a grocery store in suburban Los Angeles. In The Los Angeles Times, Bill Plaschke rips Bynum for his repeated immature behavior. Writes Plaschke: If there’s one Laker who suffers from a disability of maturity, it’s him.
♦ Former NBA player Alonzo Mourning is being sued by a Miami art school student who claims Mourning left the scene after crashing into the man’s disabled car early Sunday. The suit claims Mourning was negligent in failing to assist the 21-year-old victim, who had already been in a collision when Mourning allegedly banged into him. Mourning walked away but returned with his wife about 45 minutes later.
♦ The Pistons reportedly are set to hire Celtics assistant Lawrence Frank as their next head coach. In The Detroit News, Terry Foster laments the fact that the team passed over Bill Laimbeer, writing that the the former Pistons bad boy is “a better choice than Frank.”
