| Report: Jim Thome, B.J. Upton lead list of potential waiver trade candidates | 08.02.11 at 9:28 am ET |
Call it Trade Deadline 2.0.
Just because July 31 has come and gone, that does not necessarily mean that trades cannot be made in Major League Baseball. Rather, teams can still make trades, but now the players switching teams must first pass through waivers before any deal can be completed.
ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick writes about a few players who he thinks could very well do just that and could be sent elsewhere this August. The Twins’ Jim Thome is at the tops of that list as the Phillies or any other contending NL team could bring him in to provide a little power off the bench down the stretch. However because of his advanced age — Thome is 40 years old — teams likely won’t put in a waiver claim out of fear that the aging slugger, and the entirety of his contract, could just be handed to them when they have no place for him. Rockies first baseman/designated hitter Jason Giambi would fit into the same exact category.
Crasnick discusses Rays center fielder B.J. Upton but writes, “The chances of Upton moving in August are remote.” The only way Upton could potentially be moved would be if a team put in a waiver claim for him and then the Rays and said team would negotiate a deal from there.
The ESPN.com writer also lists Reds catcher Ramon Hernandez and Orioles DH Vladimir Guerrero as players who could be moved.
