♦ The Blue Jackets, who have made the playoffs just once since joining the NHL in 2000, reportedly have lost about $53 million the past three seasons, including almost $25 million last year, according to The Columbus Dispatch. As part of a plan to make sure the team is not forced to leave Columbus, revenues from a new casino in the city might be used to boost the club’s coffers. “It’s high on my agenda to deal with it,” Columbus mayor Michael B. Coleman said. “There should be an urgency to this issue.”
♦ Deion Sanders‘ speech at his Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony was memorable, but FOX Sports‘ Jason Whitlock insists that the former defensive back failed to get his point across. Writes Whitlock: To me, it celebrated one of the primary dysfunctions crippling African-American boys more than it enlightened them on how to truly pursue success.
♦ A 9-year-old Phillies fan who was critically injured after Thursday night’s Phillies-Giants game in San Francisco, struck by a hit-and-run driver while leaving the park, remained in critical condition all weekend. The driver, 21-year-old Andrew Vargas, was driving the wrong-way down a one-way street when he hit Ryan White and then collided with several other vehicles before fleeing. He was caught an hour later and charged with suspicion of drunken driving and felony hit and run.
