| Colts owner: Kerry Collins to join team as Peyton Manning insurance | 08.24.11 at 12:11 pm ET |
While Peyton Manning continues to work his way back to full strength following offseason neck surgery, Colts owner Jim Irsay tweeted Wednesday that the team has reached an agreement with veteran Kerry Collins.
The 38-year-old Collins, who played for five teams over 16 seasons, most recently the Titans, had announced his retirement earlier this year.
According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, the Colts also considered Jake Delhomme and Marc Bulger.
Manning has started 227 consecutive games (including 19 postseason), taking the field for every game since being drafted first overall in 1998. It’s the second-longest streak in NFL history, behind only Brett Favre.
Curtis Painter has started both of the Colts’ preseason games, completing 8-of-16 passes for 95 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. Painter did not appear in a regular-season game last season.
UConn product Dan Orlovsky and undrafted rookie Mike Hartline are the other QBs on the Colts roster.
