WHAT’S HAPPENING LOCALLY THURSDAY:
MLB: Red Sox at Rangers, 8:10 p.m. (NESN; WEEI)

AROUND THE WEB:

♦ Phillies announcer (and former major leaguer) Gary “Sarge” Matthews wasn’t shy about expressing his feelings toward the Mets Wednesday. During the game, Mets pitcher Mike Pelfrey hit Placido Polanco with a pitch and then got into a brief argument with the Phillie, accusing him of leaning into the pitch. After the contest, Matthews saw a reporter from the New York Daily News and said: “Tell them Sarge said it — the Mets are crybabies. That’s why they lose.” Matthews, whose son, Gary Matthews Jr., was released by the Mets last season, punctuated his point by making two fists and pretending to wipe tears from his eyes. “Make sure you have tears, like this,” he said. Responded Mets manager Terry Collins: “I don’t give a [expletive].”

♦ The Dodgers have been surveying their fans, soliciting their opinions about the team’s broadcasters. This includes 62-year veteran Vin Scully. Los Angeles Times columnist T.J. Simers e-mailed the team and was informed that this is an annual poll, and that Scully’s job “is his as long as he wants it.”

♦ CBS Sports analyst (and regular WEEI guest) Boomer Esiason did not hold back in offering his opinion of Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow. “He can’t play. He can’t throw,” Esiason said this week at a press event in New York. “I’m not here to insult him. The reality is he was a great college football player, maybe the greatest college football player of his time. But he’s not an NFL quarterback right now. Just because he’s God-fearing, and a great person off the field, and was a winner with the team that had the best athletes in college football, doesn’t mean his game is going to translate to the NFL.” Added Esiason: “What [former Broncos coach] Josh McDaniels saw in him, God only knows. Maybe God does know — because the rest of us don’t.”

ON THIS DAY TRIVIA: On Aug. 25, 1995, which Red Sox player hit a home run for the fifth consecutive game, tying a team record held by four others?

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “I think Bill Belichick is the best coach in this game. I don’t even think it’s close. But I’m trying. And I know one thing — he knows that I’m going to compete with him every time we play him. If it ever comes down to just me vs. him, we’re going to end up on the short end of the stick. But when it’s about us — our football team vs. his football team — that’s where I even have more confidence.” — Jets coach Rex Ryan

STAT OF THE DAY: .484 — David Ortiz‘ batting average during his eight-game hitting streak, which continued Wednesday after his return from a nine-game absence due to a heel injury

‘NET RESULTS: Ravens receiver Torrey Smith was a little nervous during Tuesday’s earthquake.

Tigers catcher Victor Martinez lets loose in the dugout.

TRIVIA ANSWER: Jose Canseco (joining Jimmie Foxx, Ted Williams, Dick Stuart and George Scott)

SOOTHING SOUNDS: Elvis Costello turns 57 Thursday.
