Jim Thome

Veteran slugger Jim Thome waived his no-trade clause Thursday night and accepted a trade from the Twins to the Indians, his original team. The Indians will send a player to be named later to Minnesota.

Thomas spent his first 12 seasons in the majors with the Indians, from 1991-2002, before signing as a free agent with the Phillies. He later played for the White Sox and Dodgers before joining the Twins.

Thome hit a team-record 334 home runs in Cleveland and helped the Indians to two World Series.

“Jim Thome is a Hall of Fame-caliber player and person,” Indians general manager Chris Antonetti said. “He has meant so much to this organization both on and off the field and it is an honor to bring him back in an Indians uniform where he created so many great memories.

“Having his bat and presence in the middle of the lineup certainly improves our team.”
