The Mavericks’ Dirk Nowitzki received the Silver Laurel Leaf, Germany’s highest honor for sport, Sunday. German President Christian Wulff presented the award to Nowitzki in Berlin, calling Nowitzki one of the “giants of German sport.”
After averaging 23.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game during the 2010-11 season, Nowitzki led the Mavericks to an NBA championship, averaging 26.0 points and 9.7 rebounds per game in the NBA finals against the Heat. Nowitzki’s performance was good enough to win the NBA finals MVP award, and Wulff thanked Nowitzki for staying “modest and restrained” through everything.
Nowitzki will play for the German national team in the European Championship that starts Tuesday in Lithuania. The two finalists from that tournament qualify for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
