| White Sox GM Ken Williams says he offered to resign before Ozzie Guillen left | 09.28.11 at 10:32 am ET |
White Sox general manager Ken Williams revealed on Tuesday that he offered to step down from his current position, the news coming just a day after former manager Ozzie Guillen departed for the Marlins.
Williams said that he proposed the resignation to White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf after several of his moves as GM have not worked out recently, most notably bringing in Adam Dunn in the offseason, who is hitting just .159 with 11 home runs this season. The White Sox will miss the playoffs for the third straight year.
With the team’s struggles, Williams said that “you have to be accountable” for what hasn’t worked out. But Williams said that Reinsdorf did not like the idea of his GM stepping down. He would not reveal when the conversation between himself and Reinsdorf was held.
Williams also said that he has started his search for a replacement for Guillen and has several candidates already lined up. He also mentioned that there could be a manager in the postseason he wishes to interview, so the process could take a while.
Guillen, meanwhile, is expected to be announced as the Marlins’ new manager in a news conference on Wednesday afternoon before Florida’s final game of the year. The Marlins have yet to confirm whether Guillen is their new manager or not, but the former White Sox manager leaked the news on his website on Monday before tweeting on Tuesday that he was in Miami and “ready to go.”
