AROUND THE WEB:

♦ The Yankees suspended a longtime beer vendor for the first two games of the American League Division Series after he had a brief exchange with Red Sox reliever Alfredo Aceves during last Sunday’s doubleheader at Yankee Stadium. Steve Lazarus, who also works as a standup comedian, said he had a playful exchange with Aceves when he saw the former Yankee pass by a freight elevator on the terrace level before the evening game. According to Lazarus, he walked over to Aceves and joked, “Hey, you got ID?” Aceves responded by grabbing his crotch and saying, “I got your ID right here.”

Lazarus, 53, said a supervisor soon accused him of harassing the player, leading to his suspension. “They take my badge — this is only my 35th year, by the way — and they escort me out like a common criminal,” Lazarus told the New York Post. “To suspend me, when I did nothing?”

Added Lazarus: “The vendor is always wrong. I’m so fed up.”

♦ Tigers closer Jose Valverde was feeling pretty good about his team after Detroit won Sunday to even the ALDS with the Yankees at a game apiece. “I think the series will finish in our house,” Valverde said after getting the save. “They have a good team, but the series is not [coming] back to New York.”

♦ Big East Conference presidents, stung by the decision of Syracuse and Pittsburgh to depart for the ACC, met at Georgetown on Sunday and urged commissioner John Marinatto to go out and find some schools willing to join the league. Reports indicate Navy and Air Force are two candidates.
