| Week 5 NFL injury roundup: Texans LB Mario Williams out for season | 10.12.11 at 7:10 am ET |
After falling to the Raiders, 25-20, on Sunday, the Texans received some bad news when they learned that linebacker Mario Williams will miss the rest of the season with a torn pectoral muscle. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2006 NFL draft, Williams suffered the injury in the first quarter of Houston’s loss to Oakland. He had made the transition from defensive end to outside linebacker at the start of this season.
“I feel so bad for Mario, because he’s such a heck of a player,” coach Gary Kubiak said Monday. “He had really taken to the position he’s playing. He was improving every day in practice, improving in every game. I’d never seen him so upbeat about what was going on.”
Here are more notable injuries and updates heading into Week 6 of the NFL season.
• The Texans are also keeping an eye on quarterback Matt Schaub, who is day-to-day with a sore throwing shoulder and thigh bruise. Wide receiver Andre Johnson is doubtful for Houston’s game against the Ravens this Sunday with a right hamstring injury.
• Packers left tackle Chad Clifton left Green Bay’s game against Atlanta with what coach Mike McCarthy is terming a “significant” hamstring injury. With McCarthy saying it could take “a couple of weeks” to determine the full extent of Clifton’s injury, it looks like the veteran offensive linemen will be missing at least be missing the next few weeks.
• 49ers receiver Joshua Morgan will miss “an extended period of time” according to coach Jim Harbaugh after Morgan broke a bone in his lower right leg in San Francisco’s 48-3 win over the Buccaneers on Sunday.
• Cardinals safety Kerry Rhodes suffered a broken foot in Arizona’s loss to the Vikings on Sunday. The injury will require surgery and will force Rhodes to miss a significant amount of time.
