AROUND THE WEB:

♦ During Monday’s legal maneuverings in a Delaware courtroom, Major League Baseball accused Dodgers owner Frank McCourt of “looting” $189 million from the team, and the name of Bryan Stow — the fan who was beaten outside Dodger Stadium on Opening Day — was introduced by both sides. Commissioner Bud Selig‘s lawyers said the Stow incident showed that McCourt provided inadequate security, while McCourt’s team said mentioning Stow shows how low MLB will go in order to force out the owner.

The owner accuses Selig of causing “irreparable harm” to McCourt’s reputation. MLB claims McCourt broke 10 league rules, each one grounds for termination of his franchise, and that McCourt “fabricates an absurd story about a ‘furious’ commissioner out to harm him.”

♦ The Lions-Falcons controversy that began Sunday continued on Monday, as Lions defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh responded to accusations that he taunted Matt Ryan when the Falcons quarterback was injured after his ankle was stepped on by his own lineman. “To me, it’s karma for all the bad stuff they’ve done in the past,” Suh said. “Their offensive lineman hurt their own quarterback.”

Suh denied taunting Ryan and accused the Falcons of dirty play, and he was backed up by teammate Stephen Tulloch. “If you watch the film, look across the Falcons offensive line,” said Tulloch, a linebacker. “They are late, cheap-shot guys who have been doing it ever since I’ve been playing against them, back when I was with Tennessee. They are chop-block guys. You watch the film and they are a real dirty team when it comes to the offensive line.”

♦ With Albert Pujols set to become a free agent, Real Clear Sports has a list of the top 10 departures of a World Series hero. The list includes Pedro Martinez, who left the Red Sox after the 2004 championship.

ON THIS DAY TRIVIA: On Oct. 25, 1986, the Red Sox famously lost Game 6 of the World Series to the Mets despite having a two-run lead in the 10th inning. Which Mets pitcher — who later played for the Red Sox — got the win even though he surrendered two runs in the top of the 10th?

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “I wouldn’t say that it’s a conditioning issue. I would say that the time he’s missed has limited his opportunity to get out on the field and getting more game-ready, which everyone needs.” – Patriots coach Bill Belichick, during his Monday appearance on The Big Show, on defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth

STAT OF THE DAY: 19 – Walks issued this postseason by Rangers starter C.J. Wilson, tying an MLB record

‘NET RESULTS: Rudy Fernandez, now playing with Real Madrid after struggling to find a home in the NBA, hits an impressive 3-pointer after being fouled — but it doesn’t count.

Notre Dame basketball coach Mike Brey surfs the crowd at a football pep rally Friday night.
