| Jaguars reportedly fire Jack Del Rio | 11.29.11 at 10:01 am ET |
ESPN’s Chris Mortenson is reporting that the Jaguars have fired coach Jack Del Rio. According to Mortenson’s sources, the team will announce the move at noon on Tuesday.
Jacksonville is 3-8 heading into next Monday night’s game against the Chargers. After releasing David Garrard right before the beginning of this season, the Jaguars have struggled to establish a starting quarterback. Luke McCown was benched in Week 3 in favor of rookie Blaine Gabbert, but Gabbert was pulled out of Sunday’s loss to the Texans.
The move should come as no surprise, given Jacksonville’s struggles. After the team went 8-8 last year, Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver made it apparent that Del Rio would not keep his job if Jacksonville did not make the postseason in the 2011 season.
“If we’re not in the playoffs, it’s pretty apparent we’ll have a different coach,” Weaver said in January.
Del Rio was hired as head coach of Jacksonville in 2003. He will end his career as Jaguars coach with a 68-71 record. The team has not had a winning record since 2007 and played in three playoff games during Del Rio’s tenure, going 1-2.
