At least 13 fans were injured — including two critically — during the fans’ on-field celebration after Oklahoma State defeated visiting Oklahoma, 44-10, Saturday night in Stillwater to win the Big 12 championship game.
Thousands of fans ran onto the field and tore down the goalposts in the celebration. According to an emergency medical official on site, fans were trampled as they rushed the field, and at least one person fell about 15 feet onto concrete.
“They won the game and stormed the field and ripped down the goalposts and some were jumping off the stands and hit the field and others got trampled. It was a nasty deal,” Michael Authement told The Associated Press.
Authement, who heads the command post at emergency medical provider LifeNet EMS, said it took police at least 45 minutes to clear the crowd from the field.
“There were thousands of people. Thousands of people stormed the field. You couldn’t move there were so many people,” he said.
Nine ambulances carried 11 of the injured away, and the two in critical condition were flown to Oklahoma City hospitals.
