Bears running back Matt Forte has carried the Chicago offense this season, as the multi-dimensional back leads the NFL in total yardage. So there was considerable concern in the Windy City when Forte went down with a knee injury in the first quarter of the Bears’ 10-3 loss to the Chiefs on Sunday. On Monday, Lovie Smith alleviated those concerns, saying that Forte would likely be back on the field before the end of the season.
“Can’t tell you exactly when or whether it’s this week or next week or whatever, but hopefully we’ll get him back soon,” Smith said.
Smith added that Forte “looked pretty good” on Monday. Forte has a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee, an injury that he also played through in 2009.
The Bears could use Forte back as soon as possible, as the offense struggled on Sunday without both him and injured quarterback Jay Cutler. Filling in for Cutler was Caleb Hanie, who completed just 11-24 passes for 133 yards and three interceptions.
Following are more notable injuries and updates from Week 13.
• Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson suffered a mild left hamstring injury against the Falcons on Sunday in just his second game back since missing the previous six with a right hamstring injury. The newest injury is much less serious than the last, though, according to coach Gary Kubiak.
• 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis suffered a Grade II hamstring strain in San Francisco’s win against the Rams on Sunday and could miss some time, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The 49ers clinched the NFC West with their win over St. Louis.
• Browns quarterback Colt McCoy suffered a sprained knee in Cleveland’s 24-10 loss to the Ravens on Sunday. His status for next Sunday’s game against the Steelers is up in the air.
• McCoy’s teammate, running back Peyton Hillis suffered another injury, this time a strained left hip against Baltimore. He is day to day with the injury.
• Jets tailback/kick returner Joe McKnight hyperextended his right elbow against the Redskins on Sunday, but an MRI revealed no tears. He is expected to sit out of Wednesday’s practice and receiver treatment over the course of the week as the Jets prepare for the Chiefs on Sunday.
• Rams quarterback A.J. Feeley suffered a broken thumb against the 49ers on Sunday. His status for St. Louis’ Monday night game against the Seahawks is unknown. Feeley was feeling in for the injured Sam Bradford.
