As they prepare to host the Bruins on Saturday afternoon, the Flyers got some bad news: Captain Chris Proger will miss the rest of the season and playoffs due to sever post-concussion syndrome.

“It’s really tough news about Chris,” said coach Peter Laviolette, who learned the news just before Thursday night’s 4-3 victory over the Canadiens in Montreal. “I think first and foremost we wish for him to have good health and anything after that I guess we’ll sort it out.”

Pronger, 27, has been sidelined since Nov. 19. He visited with concussion specialists in Pittsburgh on Wednesday after complaining about a fairly consistent headache and sluggishness.

“After consultation with respected concussion specialists Dr. Joseph Maroon and Dr. Micky Collins, it is the opinion of both doctors that Chris is suffering from severe post-concussion syndrome,” general manager Paul Holmgren said in a team statement. “It is the recommendation of doctors Maroon and Collins that Chris not return for the remainder of the 2011-12 season or playoffs. Chris will continue to receive treatment and therapy with the hope that he can get better.”

The Flyers also are missing forward Claude Giroux, the league’s leading scorer with 39 points, after he was concussed when he took an accidental knee to the head from teammate Wayne Simmonds in last Saturday’s game.

“Claude’s status remains the same,” Holmgren said. “He is out indefinitely.”
