AROUND THE WEB:

‘™¦ There were a number of bizarre injuries in baseball last year, and we’re off to a strong start in 2012. Rays pitcher David Price injured himself during Thursday’s spring training game against the Tigers while using a towel to wipe sweat off his neck. Price said he “felt a little pop,” and left the game after two innings (he was scheduled to pitch three) with minor neck spasms.

“It’s happened to me two times before,” Price explained. “The towel just catches the back of my head and it pulls my neck forward. I just felt it a little bit in back of my neck and just wanted to be cautious with it.”

Manager Joe Maddon had a little fun with the situation, suggesting Price assign someone to be a designated towel-wiper for future games.

‘™¦ A guard who was suspended from the Auburn basketball team two weeks ago is being investigated for point-shaving in at least two games this season. Varez Ward, who leads the team in assists, did not play in the final three games of the regular season or travel with the team to the SEC tournament. Coach Tony Barbee (a former UMass player) only said that Ward violated team rules.

“Auburn officials were made aware of a rumor regarding an allegation two weeks ago and immediately reported it to the FBI, the NCAA and the SEC,” Auburn said in a statement Thursday.

‘™¦ College basketball is in the spotlight this month, but it’s not all good news for the sport. Average Division 1 attendance at regular-season games has dropped each of the past four years. NCAA tournament attendance slipped to a five-year low last year despite an expanded field. The four regionals drew 77.1 percent of capacity, the lowest since the NCAA started tracking that stat in 1989.

“People are different now,” Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith told USA Today. “They cherry-pick. They won’t go to every game because you have all these other options to see the games. That’s hard. That’s what’s hurting us.”

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “As of right now we have nothing close to happening. It’s not from a lack of trying. Not necessarily to make major changes, but to make small changes at least.” – Celtics president Danny Ainge, during Thursday’s appearance on the Dennis & Callahan show

STAT OF THE DAY: 2 – Consecutive wins for the Bruins following Thursday’s 3-1 victory over the Sabres, marking the first time since Jan. 10 and 12 the B’s have won back-to-back games
