Five boxers, one swimmer and one soccer player – all from Cameroon – have gone missing during the London Olympics.
It has been reported that the seven athletes left for economic reasons.
“What began as rumor has finally turned out to be true. Seven Cameroonian athletes who participated at the 2012 London Olympic Games have disappeared from the Olympic Village,” David Ojong, the mission head said in a message sent to the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education.
The missing athletes were identified as swimmer Paul Ekane Edingue, women’s soccer backup goalie Drusille Ngako and boxers Thomas Essomba, Christian Donfack Adjoufack, Abdon Mewoli, Blaise Yepmou Mendouo and Serge Ambomo.
International Olympic Committee officials, when asked about the situation, said they knew nothing about it.
“We are unaware of it,” IOC spokesman Mark Adams said.
