AROUND THE WEB:

‘™¦ According to a report from a Jacksonville television station [3], the Jaguars are trying to engineer a trade with the Jets for Tim Tebow [4] before Thursday’s NFL trading deadline.

CBS 47 Action News credits a source as indicating the team’s interest. Jaguars owner Shad Khan previously has expressed an interest in Tebow, who starred at the University of Florida before being drafted by the Broncos [5]. Tebow, voted most overrated in a Sports Illustrated poll of NFL players, was traded from Denver to New York last offseason and has seen limited action behind Jets starter Mark Sanchez [6].

The report has not garnered much backing, with national reporters including NFL Network’s Albert Breer indicating there have been no talks between the teams [7].

‘™¦ A group of men in South Florida, including some youth football coaches with extensive criminal histories, were arrested this week [8] for their role in an alleged massive gambling operation that included bets on kids’ games.

The 18-month investigation started after an ESPN report showed money openly being exchanged at games. Reportedly, more than $100,000 was wagered on a youth football championship game.

“It’s about kids being exploited unfortunately by greedy parents and greedy grown-ups and coaches who were basically nothing more than criminals,” Deerfield Beach Sheriff Al Lamberti said.

‘™¦ One of the legendary NFL press conferences took place 10 years ago Tuesday, when then-Jets coach Herm Edwards [9] gave his “You play to win the game” speech following a loss to the Browns. Edwards, now an ESPN analyst, talked to the New York Post [10] about the quote.

“I think some people look at it and it’s kind of funny now, because it’s 10 years later,” Edwards said. “But I was protecting the game of football, the integrity of the game, the preparation and the things you have to do. When you commit to something, there’s no tapping out.”

ON THIS DAY TRIVIA: On Oct. 31, 2004, the Patriots’ 18-game regular-season winning streak was ended with a 34-20 loss to the Steelers in Pittsburgh. The Pats [11] lost only one other game that season, going 14-2 and winning their third Super Bowl [12]. Which other team beat them?

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “He was terrific. He made shots. He went right all game and we let him. … First play Ray was on the floor, we leave him by himself. You would think we would know better.” — Celtics [13] coach Doc Rivers [14], on Ray Allen‘s first game with the Heat [15]

STAT OF THE DAY: 25 – Consecutive games with double-figure assists for Rajon Rondo [16], making him just the third player in NBA history (Magic Johnson [17], John Stockton [18]) to accomplish that feat

‘NET RESULTS: Batting Stance Guy pays tribute to the World Series [19] champion Giants [20] by imitating the entire lineup.

TRIVIA ANSWER: The Dolphins, 29-28, on Dec. 20 in Miami

SOOTHING SOUNDS: Tom Paxton turns 74 Monday.
