In a move that should please Red Sox fans, Robert Andino is headed out of the American League East, as the Orioles sent the infielder to the Mariners on Tuesday for outfielder Trayvon Robinson.
Andino, 28, hit .211/.283/.305 in 127 games last season, split among second base, third base and shortstop, with two games in the outfield.
“The addition of Robert Andino gives us some experienced infield depth with a player who has played multiple positions,” Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said in a team statement. “With Robert having major league and playoff experience and still relatively young, we thought that it made sense to make this trade and let him come in and compete.”
In the 2011 regular-season finale at Baltimore, Andino capped the Red Sox’ September collapse when he hit a sinking liner with two outs in the ninth inning that eluded left fielder Carl Crawford and allowed the Orioles to score the winning run.
“End of season, like this, to make Boston go home sad, crying, I’ll take it all day,” Andino said after the Sox were eliminated from postseason contention. “To walk off, everybody wants to walk off. It’s priceless, man. You don’t have any words for it.”
Andino was drilled in the head by a fastball from Sox reliever Mark Melancon this year in a Sept. 21 game, and he implied that it might have been intentional.
“At this level, man, I think [you should] have command of your pitches,” he said. Added Andino: “If that’s the case [that it was intentional], that’s [expletive]. How I see it. But whatever.”
Robinson, 25, hit .221/.294/.324 in 46 games last season. He was traded from the Dodgers to the Mariners at the trade deadline in 2011 as part of a three-team traded that send M’s left-hander Erik Bedard to Boston.
