AROUND THE WEB:
‘¦ Jack Taylor, a guard at Grinnell (Iowa) College, scored an NCAA record 138 points in Tuesday’s 179-104 victory over visiting Faith Baptist Bible. Taylor, a 5-foot-10 sophomore, hit 52-of-108 shots, including 27-of-71 3-pointers. He also hit 7-of-10 free throws.
“I felt like anything I tossed up was going in,” Taylor told The Associated Press.
The previous record was 113 by Bevo Francis of Rio Grande against Hillsdale in 1954.
Grinnell plays an uptempo game unlike any other team in the country and has led the nation in scoring 17 of the past 19 seasons. The Pioneers’ previous individual scoring record was 89 points by Griffin Lentsch last Nov. 19 against Principia.
Taylor, who transferred from Wisconsin-La Crosse this year, scored 58 points at halftime and then averaged four points a minute in the second half. His total overshadowed an impressive performance from Faith Baptist’s David Larson, who hit 34-of-44 shots for 70 points.
Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony was informed of Taylor’s feat after a win over the Hornets in New Orleans.
“I never heard of nothing like that. That’s like a video game,” he said. “How can you shoot 100 times, though?”
‘¦ Following the Ravens’ victory over the Steelers on Sunday night in Pittsburgh, Baltimore running back Ray Rice used one of the Steelers’ Terrible Towels on his head and waved it around at fans. This did not sit well with Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley .
Woodley posted a photo of Rice with the towel and made a reference to two other running backs who disrespected the towel and then got their comeuppance — LenDale White and T.J. Houshmandzadeh: Bad idea little guy just ask lendale white and tj whosyourmama
White stomped on a Terrible Towel after his Titans beat the Steelers in 2008 and bragged that he would do it again. He was held to 28 yards in the team’s next meeting and was out of the league after the 2009 season. Houshmandzadeh wiped his feet with a Terrible Towel after scoring a touchdown for the Bengals during a 2005 game. Although he played well against Pittsburgh for a few more years, he dropped a critical fourth-down pass when playing for the Ravens in a 2010 playoff game, sealing Pittsburgh’s 31-24 win.
The Steelers and Ravens meet again on Dec. 2 in Baltimore.
‘¦ Former boxing champion Hector “Macho” Camacho was shot in the face while in a car in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Tuesday. The attack killed another man in the car and left Camacho in serious condition. Doctors said expected to survive, although he might be paralyzed.
Camacho, 50, lost his last title bout to then-welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya in 1997. He last fought in 2009 and was talking about a comeback this year. He has a career record of 79-5-3.
Camacho has been plagued by drug, alcohol and legal problems since his prime fighting days. In 2007 he was sentenced to seven years for robbing a computer store in Mississippi but served only a small portion of that time.
ON THIS DAY TRIVIA: On Nov. 21, 1992, with a 4-3 victory over the Flyers, which Bruin became the 20th goalie in NHL history to record 250 career victories?
QUOTE OF THE DAY: “I’m definitely frustrated. I want to be playing, there’s no doubt about that. [I’m] absolutely pissed off that it’s the middle of November, going into late November and we’re still doing this, but I don’t think me badmouthing anyone is going to speed the process up. I’m just trying to not be as emotional as I’d like to be because it just gets me all fired up. That doesn’t really do anything, except when I’m sparring with my boxing coach, and he doesn’t like it.” – Bruins forward Shawn Thornton , on the NHL lockout
STAT OF THE DAY: 7-for-19 – Free throw shooting totals for Lakers center Dwight Howard in Tuesday’s 95-90 victory over the visiting Nets that marked the debut of Mike D’Antoni as Lakers coach
‘NET RESULTS: Here’s a creative trick shot, as golfer Gary Evans bounces a ball into his mouth then spits it out and drives it down the fairway.
With the NHL in a work stoppage, the Predators turn a youth hockey game into an NHL-style affair.
TRIVIA ANSWER: Andy Moog
SOOTHING SOUNDS: Livingston Taylor turns 61 Monday.
