AROUND THE WEB:
♦ The Jets put up another offensive stinker Sunday, but they managed to pull out a 7-6 victory over the Cardinals that kept their slim playoff hopes alive. Quarterback Mark Sanchez was brutally heckled by Jets fans for his brutal play — even after backup Greg McElroy entered the game late in the third quarter to loud cheers and threw a 1-yard touchdown pass.
“Well, you can definitely tell that the stadium was happy about it,” defensive back Yeremiah Bell said.
“It’s just something that I sensed, that I felt,” coach Rex Ryan said. “When you’re around this game long enough, you get that feeling that: You know what? I’ve seen enough, and it’s time to make that change.”
After the win, Jets players were hesitant to say too much about the QB controversy.
“It definitely energized us a little bit having the crowd behind us, but other than that, it was a coach’s decision,” receiver Stephen Hill said. “I’m here for both quarterbacks so I don’t have anything to say.”
Sanchez acknowledged that, “From the get-go, from the first play, it just wasn’t my day,” and added: “I’m really happy for the team and really happy for Greg. He came in and played his butt off.”
Meanwhile, injured Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis had a message for his teammates over the weekend: “Guys just need to shut up.”
Talking to Newsday on Saturday while at a shopping mall in New Jersey where he was promoting his first signature training shoe, Revis said his teammates need to focus on the game instead of making headlines for their big mouths.
“Quit talking crazy to the media, especially involving your teammates,” Revis said. “I think that’s the worst, because when you do that, that’s when it really gets divided. Because you don’t know if you can trust your other teammate.”
After Sunday’s victory, the Jets are 3-6 since Revis suffered an ACL injury in Week 3 and 5-7 overall.
♦ The tragedy in Kansas City got most of the headlines, but there was another sad situation in Cleveland over the weekend in which a member of the Browns ground crew killed himself at the team’s practice facility .
Eric Eucker‘s body was found Saturday morning.
“This is a terrible tragedy and our heartfelt condolences go out to Eric’s family,” the team said in a statement . “Eric was a good friend and colleague, and an outstanding employee. He will be missed by everyone in the Cleveland Browns organization.”
♦ Old friend Rasheed Wallace is up to his old tricks in New York . Wallace, the onetime Celtic who came out of retirement to join the Knicks this fall, played just 85 seconds of Sunday’s game against the Suns at Madison Square Garden. After getting hit with a technical for pushing Luis Scola after fouling him, Wallace broke out his catchphrase “Ball don’t lie” when Goran Dragic missed the technical free throw. That comment earned him his second tech and a quick ejection.
“He’s the only guy in the league that gets a technical for saying ‘Ball don’t lie,’ ” teammate Carmelo Anthony said of Wallace, who has amassed 317 technicals and 30 ejections in his career. “Scola kept playing after the play, and in this league there’s something called continuation. He stopped him and they gave him a tech. It is what it is. ‘Sheed came and apologized to us, and we move on.
“He came in. It was the right thing to do. He came in and he apologized to us for getting kicked out, and you move on.”
