The 32-year-old son of Clippers owner Donald Sterling was found dead in his Southern California home, apparently of a drug overdose, authorities said Wednesday.
Scott Ashley Sterling was found late Tuesday night in his Malibu residence after friends notified police that he had not been heard from in several days. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
“Sheriff’s homicide and Los Angeles County coroner’s personnel at this time believe that Sterling died of an apparent drug overdose,” the statement read.
Donald Sterling has owned the Clippers for 32 seasons. In September he was ranked No. 250 on Forbes’ list of the richest Americans, with a net worth of $1.9 billion. Scott Sterling was not mentioned in the team’s media guide as having any involvement with the team.
In 2009, Scott Sterling was under investigation after shooting a friend in the leg, claiming his friend attacked him with a knife. Police asked for charges but prosecutors declined, indicating that the victim had credibility issues.
