Oregon coach Chip Kelly has decided to make the jump to the NFL as coach of the Eagles, the team announced Wednesday.
Kelly, a New Hampshire native who played at UNH and later served as an assistant coach for the Wildcats, had a change of heart, as last week he indicated he planned to stay at Oregon.
Kelly, 49, spent four years as head coach of the Ducks, compiling a record of 46-7, after two seasons as the team’s offensive coordinator. Oregon went 12-1 this season and was ranked No. 2 after beating Kansas State in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 3.
“Chip Kelly will be an outstanding head coach for the Eagles,” owner Jeffrey Lurie said in a story on the team’s website. “He has a brilliant football mind. He motivates his team with his actions as well as his words. He will be a great leader for us and will bring a fresh, energetic approach to our team.”
Earlier Wednesday, the Bears hired Marc Trestman from the Canadian Football League’s Montreal Alouettes. Trestman, who led the Alouettes to two Grey Cup titles in five seasons, has extensive NFL experience as an offensive assistant coach with the Vikings, Buccaneers, Browns, 49ers, Lions, Cardinals, Raiders and Dolphins.
