♦ Former Patriots receiver Randy Moss, whose comeback to the NFL after a one-year absence has led to an appearance in the Super Bowl with the 49ers, reportedly will attempt to play again next season.
Pro Football Talk credits a source with knowledge of Moss’ thinking as saying the player wants to return. He is slated to become a free agent in March, one month after his 36th birthday.
Moss has stirred up some controversy in every one of his previous five stops in the league, but he has been quiet in San Francisco, accepting his responsibility as a role player while making 28 catches for 434 yards and three touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Pro Football Talk also reports that quarterback Alex Smith, who lost his starting job to Colin Kaepernick midway through the season, will seek his release before the start of free agency. The team was expected to try to trade Smith, who is due $8.5 million in 2013, but apparently he is willing to forfeit that money for a chance to sign with a team of his choice.
♦ The New York Daily News reported over the weekend that the Drug Enforcement Administration and Major League Baseball are investigating a training and nutrition adviser to Alex Rodriguez for links to performance-enhancing drugs.
Anthony Bosch is said to be a well-known figure among current and former Latin players in South Florida. Bosch and his father, Pedro Publio Bosch, were connected to Manny Ramirez when the then-Dodgers outfielder was suspended for 50 games in 2009 for using a banned substance. Pedro Bosch, a physician, reportedly wrote the prescription for the banned drug used by Ramirez.
♦ Olympic 100-meter hurdler Lolo Jones was a part of the gold medal-winning U.S. bobsled-skeleton team at the world championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Jones served as the brakewoman on the bobsled driven by Elana Meyers, which finished third and contributed to the Americans’ team title at the combined event.
Jones is a two-time world champion in the indoor 60-meter hurdles, winning in 2008 and ’10.
