According to a Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, the 49ers have an agreement to trade quarterback Alex Smith to the Chiefs. Other reports indicate the deal is for a second-round draft pick in 2013 (No. 34 overall) plus a conditional mid-round pick in 2014. The deal can’t be made official until March 12, when the new league year begins.
Smith, the 2005 No. 1 overall draft pick out of Utah, lost his starting job in San Francisco to Colin Kaepernick, who led the Niners to the Super Bowl. In Kansas City he would be expected to take over for the struggling Matt Cassel.
Smith, 28, played 10 games this past season, completing 70.2 percent of his passes (153-of-218) for 1,737 yards and 13 touchdowns, with five interceptions. He had a QB rating of 104.1.
In his seven-year career, Smith has completed 59.3 percent of his passes for 14,280 yards and 81 touchdowns, with 63 interceptions. He has a QB rating of 79.1.
