According to a Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer [1], the 49ers [2] have an agreement to trade quarterback Alex Smith [3] to the Chiefs. Other reports indicate the deal is for a second-round draft pick in 2013 (No. 34 overall) plus a conditional mid-round pick in 2014. The deal can’t be made official until March 12, when the new league year begins.

Smith, the 2005 No. 1 overall draft pick out of Utah, lost his starting job in San Francisco to Colin Kaepernick, who led the Niners to the Super Bowl [4]. In Kansas City he would be expected to take over for the struggling Matt Cassel [5].

Smith, 28, played 10 games this past season, completing 70.2 percent of his passes (153-of-218) for 1,737 yards and 13 touchdowns, with five interceptions. He had a QB rating of 104.1.

In his seven-year career, Smith has completed 59.3 percent of his passes for 14,280 yards and 81 touchdowns, with 63 interceptions. He has a QB rating of 79.1.
