AROUND THE WEB:

♦ South Florida radio station WQAM fired sports talk show host Dan Sileo after a number of controversial comments during his 11-months with the station, including a Twitter attack on Fox Sports broadcaster Erin Andrews.

Tweeted Sileo: FIRED FOR SPEAKING MY MIND BABY!!!! Love it!!

And: Want to thank the Folks at WQAM for having me…We differ on content…WISH them WELL and GOOD LUCK..I WILL NEVER CHANGE!!!!

Sileo, who was fired from his previous job at Tampa’s WDAE after referring to three black NFL players as “monkeys,” was suspended two days in January after starting a Twitter war with Andrews. In one of Sileo’s tweets, he wrote: Love Erin Andrews either naked or in a porn. Not at a sports desk.

“We parted ways with him and wish him well,” program director Jorge Sedano told The Miami Herald.

A former University of Miami defensive lineman who played 10 games in the NFL with the Buccaneers in 1987, Sileo famously went off on the Hurricanes in September following a 52-13 loss at Kansas State, saying that the players should “pull a knife on [the opposing quarterback] and stick him.” WQAM is the flagship station of the team’s radio network.

♦ A private group is looking to get Mayor Thomas Menino‘s approval to campaign to get the Summer Olympics in Boston in 2024. The Boston Olympic Exploratory Committee expects the mayor’s approval following a meeting with City Hall officials Monday, committee chairman Eric Reddy told The Boston Globe.

“What we want is a green light to pursue this for, say, five months and see how far we get,” Reddy said. “We would form a [nonprofit organization] and begin to seek donations.”

Boston was one of 35 municipalities to make a bid to the U.S. Olympic Committee two weeks ago. The United States has not hosted the Summer Olympics since 1996 (Atlanta).

♦ Yankees general manager Brian Cashman broke his leg and dislocated his ankle landing a parachute jump Monday with the Golden Knights of the U.S. Army.

Cashman underwent surgery Monday after suffering the injury on his second jump of the day. The event was designed to raise awareness for the Wounded Warrior Project.

“I’m in great spirits, and it was an awesome experience,” Cashman said from his Florida hospital, via the New York Daily News. “The Golden Knights are first class. While I certainly didn’t intend to raise awareness in exactly this fashion, I’m extremely happy that the Wounded Warrior Project is getting the well-deserved additional attention.”

ON THIS DAY TRIVIA: On March 5, 2002, Joe Kerrigan was fired as Red Sox manager by the new ownership group. Who was named interim manager until Grady Little was hired six days later?

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “I think what Z was doing more than anything else is he’s sending a message not only to the Montreal Canadiens but to the rest of the league. And believe me, that message has resonated. I just got done watching Tampa and Pittsburgh skate, and all the players know what happened last night. And they’re like, they don’t want to mess with Chara.” — NBC Sports analyst Pierre McGuire, during Monday’s appearance on Mut & Merloni, on Zdeno Chara taking revenge against Canadiens defenseman Alexei Emelin in Sunday’s game

STAT OF THE DAY: 50 – Points for Baylor women’s basketball star Brittney Griner — including her first dunk at home in three years — in her final home regular-season game, a 90-68 rout of Kansas State

‘NET RESULTS: Timberwolves guard J.J. Barea is ejected for bumping Heat guard Ray Allen.

The Orlando Magic’s “Dancing Dads” do the Harlem Shake.

Penguins forward Chris Kunitz bats away a wayward puck to protect coach Dan Bylsma.

TRIVIA ANSWER: Mike Cubbage

Barea got ejected for that but the guy that tagged Griffin in the nuts stayed in the game? yeah the refs are not favoring the heat at all!!!!!!!

  2. bruinman86 Says:

What do you think Sileo could do for WEEI’s ratings??

  3. Jack Says:

Sileo was a first class A-hole when he was on ‘EEI for a couple of days. He’s certainly not the answer to increase ratings. Get rid of Muttnansky and they’ll win mid-day by a landslide.

  4. Imgurian Says:

No, Mr. Sileo, you were fired for being an inconsiderate jerk. There’s something people usually have called inhibition. He should learn to develop his a little more.

  5. celticsfan4ever Says:

Dan Sileo to WEEI!! Would be awesome and DEFINITELY boost ratings and challenge 98.5

  6. 985 fan Says:

I agree with jack…gresh and zo are hard to listen to, this is comming from a 98.5 diehard since day one. Almost anything is better then these two…

  7. BossHog Says:

How can 98.5 be a die hard if he is wandering during their drive home show? What a tool. Big Show blows without Ordway. Holley can’t run the show. So now there is nothing on in the afternoon. Bring in the stabber at least I can laugh at him. I don’t think Jonah Salk will be the answer…Holley is “young” and has a job for one reason. Is Holley terrible no, is he good, no!
