Linebacker Ausar Walcott, signed by the Brown last month as an undrafted free agent from Virginia, was charged Tuesday with first-degree attempted murder after he allegedly punched a man outside a club in New Jersey early Sunday morning, Passaic police told the Bergen (N.J.) Record. Walcott, 23, also faces charges of second-degree aggravated assault and third-degree endangering an injured victim. He is being held on $500,000 bail.

The victim, 24-year-old New York City resident Derrick Jones, is in critical condition. He was taken to the Harlem Hospital Center in Manhattan by friends after the confrontation.

The Browns released a brief statement saying they are “aware of the situation,” adding: “This is a pending legal matter and we will not comment.”

While at Virginia, Walcott was arrested in January 2011 and faced charges of assault and battery for his role in a fight. He was suspended from the team but reinstated after the charges were dismissed.
