49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick: Insecure Richard Sherman ‘afraid’ of San Francisco receivers

Colin Kaepernick typically has few words for the media, but after Richard Sherman‘€™s postgame interview after the NFC championship, the 49ers quarterback decided to open up.

“I think everyone knows his comments were ridiculous,” Kaepernick said of Sherman to the New York Post.

“As my dad has always told me, if you have to tell people how good you are, then how good are you really? If you have to go on national TV and try to say you’€™re the best cornerback in the league, then you’ve got your own insecurities.”

Seattle’€™s Sherman made a choke sign toward Kaepernick after the quarterback underthrew a pass to Michael Crabtree in the end zone at the end of the championship game. According to Sherman, the 49er should have known better than to throw the ball near him.

Kaepernick responded Thursday saying he would attempt the same play again.

“I don’€™t care who’€™s out there,” Kaepernick said. “I had Crabtree one-on-one with half of the field to himself, and I’€™m going to take that every single time. He made a good play on that ball, but if I throw it a foot farther, it’€™s a touchdown and now you’€™re the goat, Richard Sherman.

“It’€™s a game of inches. The inches were in [Sherman’€™s] favor in that case, but this game will humble you very quickly.”

Kaepernick is also familiar with taunting players from opposing teams, as he mocked Panthers quarterback Cam Newton three weeks ago when the teams faced off for the division title. Kaepernick, who was criticized for his action, still questioned Sherman for his less than gracious behavior after the win.

“Did that make you feel better about yourself? Then go ahead, because I’€™m not worried about you,” Kaepernick said. “I’€™m just worried about winning games and helping us get to the Super Bowl.

“I can’€™t get insulted by something that ridiculous coming from somebody like that. From the time that [championship-game final] play ended to the time his [postgame] news conference ended, let’€™s just say it wasn’t very politically correct.”

The 49ers and Seahawks will match up at least two more times next season, and Kaepernick said he is excited to take on Sherman during the next game between the rivals.

“I’€™ll take that matchup every day,” Kaepernick said. “I feel like he’€™s afraid of our receivers, and that’€™s something I look forward to [exploiting] next year.”

With his feelings toward Sherman in mind, Kaepernick has a clear favorite in this year’€™s Super Bowl.

“Go Peyton [Manning]!” Kaepernick said. “I think there are a lot of opportunities in the inside zones that [the Broncos will] have a chance to exploit, and when [the Seahawks] get their nickel defense out there, they’€™ll have some good matchups. They have the receivers to match up really well with [Seattle’€™s] defensive backs, and they’€™ll have opportunities to make some big plays.

“From what I’ve seen of Denver, the depth they have at receiver and the playmakers they have on offense are better than some of the defensive players in [the Seahawks‘] nickel defense.”
