The Orioles will play the rest of the season with a major hole in their lineup.

Manager Buck Showalter announced Monday that catcher Matt Wieters will have season-ending Tommy John surgery on his right elbow Tuesday. Showalter said he’s hopeful that Wieters will be ready for opening day next season.

“We were hoping to get real lucky today, but I think we all knew where it was headed,” Showalter said. “It really wasn’t making a whole lot of progress.”

Wieters hasn’t played since May 10 with his ailing elbow. He had it examined by Dr. James Andrews Monday, and will have the injured ligament replaced by a tendon from the right wrist.

Wieters finishes the year with a .308 batting average, five home runs and 18 RBIs in 26 games.
