Tigers manager Brad Ausmus apologizes for wife-beating joke

Following Detroit’€™s 2-1 loss to the Royals Wednesday, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus attempted a sarcastic joke during his postgame presser that instantly went over the line — something that the first-year skipper realized right away.

When asked how the former catcher has been able to stay calm during the team’€™s recent skid of losing 20 of its last 29 games, Ausmus noted that it was “€œnot fun.” However, when asked how he reacts when he’€™s at home, Ausmus responded with a distasteful and ill-advised quip.

“€œI beat my wife,”€ Ausmus said. “€œI’€™m just kidding. No, luckily, my wife and kids are fantastic. I do get a little mopey at home, but my wife and kids are good. They’ve seen me be in a bad mood after a loss, so they’ve been great.”

Ausmus answered one more question before apologizing again for his inappropriate remark.

“I didn’t want to make light of battered women,” Ausmus said. “I apologize for that if it offended anyone.”
