Report: Steve Williams backtracks and says he was ‘over the top’ 08.09.11 at 11:55 am ET
By Sam Dykstra   |  1 Comment

Steve Williams, the most well-known golf caddie in the world, said after winning the Bridgestone Invitational with Adam Scott on Sunday that the tournament victory was “the most satisfying win of my career,” despite having won 13 majors and numerous other tournaments during his time with Tiger Woods.

But in a FOXSports.com story published the very next day, Williams appeared to have backed off those comments.

“Looking back on it, I was a bit over the top,” he told Robert Lusetich. “I had a lot of anger in me about what happened [with Woods] and it all came out.”

Woods had fired Williams as his caddie after he had allegedly become angered that Williams had begun working with Scott while Woods recovered from various injuries. Williams, of course, didn’t agree with the decision, thus leading to the comments that started a media firestorm late Sunday and leading into Monday. However, the caddie says he is past the ordeal.

“I had a lot of emotions going on all week,” Williams told FOXSports.com. “You hear people say, ’How good are you now that you’re not caddying for Tiger,’ things like that, and it makes you want to prove yourself. … But, look, it’s time to move on. The Tiger thing is over.”

Report: Yao Ming could enter Hall of Fame next year 08.09.11 at 11:27 am ET
By Sam Dykstra   |  1 Comment

When a player retires and is good enough to warrant it, the discussions about whether or not that player deserves to be in his sport’s Hall of Fame begin almost instantly. (See: Randy Moss.)

So when Yao Ming announced his retirement due to injury this summer, the talk was that although he was an eight-time All-Star in the NBA, his injuries and early departure from the game would likely keep him out of joining the all-time greats in Springfield.

However, there may still be a way that the 7-foot-6 giant of a man, both in stature and influence, could find a way to still make the Hall of Fame and much earlier than he would have been eligible.

According to a report by NBA.com, “representatives from the Chinese Basketball Association and media in China signaled plans to nominate Yao in the contributor category and bypass the usual five-year waiting period for retired players.”

Yao could make the perfect contributor candidate for the Hall, given the way he spread the NBA and basketball to China during his time in the league. According to the report, David Stern once said of Yao, “his dominant play and endearing demeanor along with his extensive humanitarian efforts have made him an international fan favorite and provided an extraordinary bridge between basketball fans in the United States and China.”

The list of people who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame as contributors includes the sport’s inventor James Naismith, former Harlem Globetrotter Meadowlark Lemon, Lakers owner Jerry Buss and ESPN personality Dick Vitale.

Report: Dennis Rodman’s Hall induction clothes to go on display 08.09.11 at 11:02 am ET
By Sam Dykstra   |  No Comments

Some will remember Dennis Rodman for his defensive and rebounding prowess as well as his five championships in the NBA, two with the Pistons and three with the Bulls. Most will remember him for his off-the-court antics that include wearing a wedding dress, his short-lived marriage to Carmen Electra and even his recent appearance on “Celebrity Apprentice.”

Now the Basketball Hall of Fame has found a way to combine the best of both worlds.

According to successive tweets from NBA.com’s Scott Howard Cooper, Rodman, who will be inducted into the game’s hallowed Hall on Friday in Springfield, has promised Hall of Fame officials that there will be “no antics” during his enshrinement speech. The Hall of Fame reciprocated the offer by saying that it will keep Rodman’s Friday outfit on display because Cooper notes, “It’s worth seeing.”

Shane Victorino only player to be suspended following Giants-Phillies brawl 08.09.11 at 10:37 am ET
By Sam Dykstra   |  No Comments

Last Friday, Giants reliever Ramon Ramirez plunked Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino, and then things got a little testy. Victorino began walking toward the mound to address Ramirez, and Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco began charging as well before Giants catcher Eli Whiteside confronted him. Benches for both sides began to clear, and Victorino had to be physically restrained from attacking any of his opponents.

Now according to the San Francisco Chronicle, Victorino (three games) will be the only player suspended for the event while Ramirez, Polanco and Whiteside will all be fined. Ramirez and Whiteside both were surprised that they weren’t told to sit for a game or two.

“I really believed I was the one who was going to be suspended,” said Ramirez via a translator. “It’s a surprise. I was waiting for a suspension, at least a day.”

Said Whiteside, “”I might have looked a little crazy jumping around out there. I didn’t throw any punches. I didn’t hit anybody. My intention was to protect my pitcher. I’m happy with the outcome.”

Victorino has appealed his three-game suspension, according to the Chronicle.

Jerry Rice: Randy Moss unwillingness to work was ‘slap in the face’ 08.09.11 at 10:06 am ET
By Sam Dykstra   |  No Comments

Jerry Rice is undeniably the best wide receiver to ever, but the former 49ers great doesn’t think he should have been.

Rice told ESPN Radio on Tuesday morning that he thought the recently retired Randy Moss could have taken the title away from him simply because he had more talent than Rice. (Quotes come courtesy NBCSports.com’s Pro Football Talk.)

“He could have been one of the greatest if he had worked just a little bit harder,” Rice said. “I don’t think he wanted to give it 100 percent. You never knew what you were going to get with Randy. Sometimes you’d get the unbelievable guy, the amazing guy. Other times you’d get the guy that took a couple plays off.”

Earlier Rice admitted that he took Moss’s laziness personally and felt afflicted by the star receiver’s unwillingness to live up to his potential.

“It was hard for me to swallow because I was not as talented and I had to work harder,” Rice said. “To see a guy with that much talent not give it 100 percent, it was almost like a little slap in the face. But Randy was Randy.”

Report: Lions sign RBs Mike Bell, Jerome Harrison 08.09.11 at 9:52 am ET
By Sam Dykstra   |  No Comments

The Lions’ depth at the running back position took a big hit when second-round pick Mikel Leshoure tore his Achilles tendon Monday, causing him to miss his entire rookie season.

So in a pair of moves that will address that new weakness, the Lions signed running backs Mike Bell and Jerome Harrison on Tuesday, according to a tweet from ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Interestingly, Schefter adds in a later tweet that both players were traded for each other during last season in a deal between the Eagles and Browns (Bell went to Cleveland, Harrison to Philadelphia).

Bell played in all 16 games between those two teams but ran for just 99 total yards last season. Harrison showed flashes of greatness, rushing for 109 yards in a game for the Eagles against the Redskins and 99 in the season finale against the Cowboys, but didn’t rush for more than 20 yards in any other game. He totaled 330 yards on the ground in 2010.

Report: Danny Carcillo sets targets on Canucks 08.09.11 at 9:35 am ET
By Sam Dykstra   |  1 Comment

Danny Carcillo may have just won himself some points with Bruins fans.

The former Flyers enforcer who signed with the Blackhawks this offseason used his first press conference to call out Chicago’s rivals, the Canucks, and said he wouldn’t be afraid to introduce himself in a less-than-polite manner, according to CSN Chicago’s Tracey Myers.

“A few guys there play a little outside of their shoes,” Carcillo said. “And I think I can keep most of these guys in check when we play them this year.”

According to Myers, Carcillo named Max Lapierre in particular when discussing the players he would keep “in check,” but he also called out former Canucks Raffi Torres and Tanner Glass, players who have left Vancouver for Phoenix and Winnipeg respectively.

The Canucks and Blackhawks played a seven-game series in the opening round of the Western Conference playoffs last season with the Canucks winning Game 7 in overtime. (Vancouver would eventually lose a Game 7 of their own when they fell to the B’s in the Stanley Cup finals.) Chicago and Vancouver have met at some point in three straight postseasons.

Report: Dwight Howard upset about Amway Center’s lack of noise 08.09.11 at 9:11 am ET
By Sam Dykstra   |  No Comments

When the Amway Center in Orlando opened last year, it was instantly named one of the most modern sports and entertainment arenas in the country with an increase in restaurants and other amenities as compared to the old Amway Arena. But at the end of the day, the building was built primarily to be the home of the Magic, and the team’s star center thinks that home could be a little louder.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Dwight Howard told a Twitter follower who thought Magic fans only show up and get loud for the playoffs, “that upsets me cuz I don’t wait till the playoffs to play hard. I give y’all my best everynite. Y becuz some people don’t get a chance to be at everygame. And I want them to always remember the nite they saw me play. So. I play for y’all. I feed off the fans. ESP at home. It’s a different atmosphere in the playoffs at the arena. That same atmosphere should be during the season.”

The report goes on to talk about how the movement of the luxury boxes down toward court-level, as compared to being skyboxes in the old building, has brought game attendees who tend to be quieter down towards the players, thus pushing the louder fans toward the back where it’s harder to hear them.

Joe DiMaggio first of four MLB players to be featured in new stamp series 08.09.11 at 8:46 am ET
By Sam Dykstra   |  No Comments

For starters, yes, stamps still exist.

Now that that’s out of the way, Joe DiMaggio will be featured on a U.S. postal stamp for surprisingly the first time ever as part of the “Major League Baseball All-Star Stamps” series. (You can see the stamp here on Yahoo!’s Big League Stew blog.)

The series will feature four players in total, meaning three baseball stars have yet to be revealed in the series. Sports Illustrated writer Joe Posnanski wrote on his blog, Joe Blogs, which players he believes could be that remaining trio. The requirements to be on a stamp include that the person featured on the stamp can no longer be living and the subject can’t have been featured on a stamp in the last 50 years.

That leaves the next obvious choice to be Ted Williams, according to Posnanski, because he has never been featured on a stamp and is unfortunately no longer with us. Posnanski lists Carl Hubbell, Willie Stargell and others as potential players to take the last two stamps but later adds that a source told him he has guessed three of the four but the fourth continues to elude him.

Chad Ochocinco wins $500 from fiancee in Red Sox-Yankees bet 08.09.11 at 8:21 am ET
By Sam Dykstra   |  No Comments

That’s certainly one way to get New England fans on your side.

Patriots wide receiver Chad Ochocinco, who joined the team following a trade from the Bengals in July, is getting a crash course in what it means to live in the northeast, and part of that lesson included taking in a Red Sox-Yankees game on Sunday with fiancee Evelyn Lozada, a Yankees fan. Ochocinco, of course, tweeted a picture of his view from the third-base line and was caught on the Fenway big screen in center field donning a Red Sox cap and T-shirt.

But if that wasn’t enough to win over his new neighbors, this certainly would. A day after the Sox 3-2 extra-innings win over the Pinstripes, Ochocinco again took to Twitter to tell the masses that he won a $500 bet on the game from Lozada, who you may also recognize as former Celtics forward Antoine Walker‘s ex-fiancee.
