WHAT’S HAPPENING LOCALLY MONDAY:
NHL: Avalanche at Bruins, 1 p.m. (NESN)

AROUND THE WEB:

♦ A 31-year-old man was arrested Sunday after running toward the seventh green at CordeValle golf course in San Martin, Calif., and throwing a hot dog in the direction of Tiger Woods during the final round of the Frys.com Open. “I was kind of focusing on my putt when he started yelling,” said Woods, who finished in a tie for 30th. “Next thing I know, he laid on the ground and looked like he wanted to be arrested, really, because he laid on the ground, put his hands behind his back and turned his head.”

The man told police he wasn’t throwing the hot dog at Woods, even though he called Woods’ name before tossing it in the air. “He was very cooperative,” Sgt. Jose Cardoza said. “They said, ‘Why did you do this?’ He just shook his head in guilt or remorse. He didn’t give a reason why he did it.”

Gary Bettman, who was booed by Vancouver fans when he awarded the Stanley Cup to the Bruins in June, was cheered in Winnipeg Sunday as the new Jets played their first regular-season home game, 15 years after the previous version of the team departed for Phoenix. “A great day for the city of Winnipeg, the province of Manitboa, the entire country of Canada,” Bettman said.

Brad Pitt has a hit with his portrayal of A’s general manager Billy Beane in “Moneyball,” and now Clint Eastwood appears headed for a starring role in a baseball movie. Eastwood reportedly will play a veteran scout who is trying to find one last prospect before he loses his sight in the movie “Trouble With the Curve.”

ON THIS DAY TRIVIA: On Oct. 10, 1999, the Red Sox exploded for 23 runs on 24 hits, both postseason records, in a 23-7 rout of the Indians in Game 4 of the American League Division Series. Which Indians ace who would later go on to pitch for the Red Sox took the loss?

Wednesday’s Morning Mashup: Former A’s manager Art Howe unhappy with ‘Moneyball’ portrayal 09.28.11 at 7:50 am ET

Welcome to Wednesday’s Morning Mashup. For the latest news, start at our WEEI.com home page or click here for the top stories from our news wire.

WHAT’S HAPPENING LOCALLY WEDNESDAY:
MLB: Red Sox at Orioles, 7:05 p.m. (NESN; WEEI)

AROUND THE WEB:

♦ Former A’s manager Art Howe is not pleased with his representation in the movie “Moneyball.” Howe, who led the A’s to the playoffs three times (2000 through 2002), went on to manage the Mets and now lives in Texas. He saw the movie over the weekend and did not like Philip Seymour Hoffman‘s portrayal. “I’m very disappointed, very disappointed,” he told InsideBayArea.com. “I look at it as character assassination.”

Howe is known as a mild-mannered manager, but he was portrayed as aggressive and combative with general manager Billy Beane (played by Brad Pitt). “It wasn’t even close to my personality,” Howe said. “They just went out of their way to degrade me.”

♦ The Mets have had a miserable season on and off the field, but on Tuesday they got some good news. The team’s owners won’t have to repay $1 billion to victims of Bernard Madoff‘s financial scheming after a federal district court judge dismissed nine of the 11 counts against them.

♦ The Redskins rid themselves of the problem that is Albert Haynesworth, but they still have at least one attitude problem on their roster. Cornerback DeAngelo Hall has been the subject of widespread criticism since he surrendered a 30-yard reception to Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant on third-and-21 on the deciding drive of Monday’s 18-16 Dallas victory and was flagged for a facemask on the play. Bryant, who said before the game he wanted to take a shot at Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo‘s broken ribs, insisted after the game that the referees made a bad call on the facemask and essentially blamed Washington defensive coordinator Jim Haslett for making the wrong call on the play. At Yahoo! Sports, Jason Cole writes about the Redskins’ latest problem child.

ON THIS DAY TRIVIA: In 2005, the Red Sox became the first team in 55 years to have four players score 100 runs. Johnny Damon, David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez were the first three to reach the milestone. Which player joined them by scoring both of the Sox’ runs in a 7-2 loss to the Blue Jays on Sept. 28?

A’s to meet with Lance Berkman 11.30.10 at 11:05 am ET
By Jillian Fay   |  No Comments

One of A’s general manager Billy Beane‘s priorities this offseason is to find a reliable hitter who can help the club score more runs for its talented pitching staff. So, on Tuesday, they are planning to meet with 34-year-old free agent Lance Berkman. The switch-hitter batted .248 with 14 home runs and 58 RBIs this past season between the Astros and Yankees. In late October the Yankees declined to exercise the $15 million contract option for Berkman, who received a $2 million buyout.

The A’s finished 81-81 in 2010. They stayed in the AL West chase until late in the season, losing out to the eventual AL champion Rangers.
