| Gammons: DeJesus to Boston is ‘out the window’ | 07.23.10 at 4:23 pm ET |
Peter Gammons told The Big Show on Friday afternoon that a rumored David DeJesus-to-the-Red Sox deal is “out the window.” According to Gammons, the Kansas City outfielder, who injured his thumb crashing into the wall on a play against the Yankees in New York on Thursday night, will be out 4-to-6 weeks with the injury and will have surgery on Monday. It was believed that DeJesus had been one of the biggest outfield targets on the trade market, garnering interest from several contending teams, including the Red Sox. DeJesus was hitting .318 when he was injured.

Multiple reports have emerged that Royals outfielder David DeJesus was put on the 15-day disabled list after injuring his thumb in a collision with the outfield wall in Thursday’s game against the Yankees. DeJesus had been one of the biggest outfield targets on the trade market, garnering interest from several contending teams including the Red Sox. ESPN baseball insider Buster Olney tweeted that he could miss as little as two weeks or as many as six, depending on whether or not the thumb requires surgery. In either scenario, he will be out past the July 31 trading deadline.
| DeJesus hurt in New York | 07.22.10 at 9:39 pm ET |
It appears when a player is even rumored to be coming to Boston, they get injured – even a star player who might have a chance to leave a struggling club for a contending team.
It’s been that kind of season for the Red Sox, and now for David DeJesus.
The Kansas City outfielder, rumored to have the interest of several contending teams including the Red Sox, had to leave Thursday’s game at Yankee Stadium when he crashed into the right-center field wall attempting to catch Derek Jeter‘s fly ball. He caught the ball but it dropped out of his glove on his right hand as he fell to the ground.
DeJesus appeared to bend his right hand backward underneath his glove as he crashed into the wall. Several innings later, the Royals announced the official diagnosis as a sprained right thumb.
The Royals added that DeJesus would be out for the remainder of the four-game Yankees series, which opened Thursday in the Bronx.
As Jeter raced around the bases the bases for his second career inside-the-park home run, and first since 1996, DeJesus lay on the warning track holding his right hand and wrist. He had to leave the game, with the assistance of a Royals team trainer.
The Royals are mired in fourth place in the American League Central while the Red Sox are battling to remain in playoff contention, entering Thursday 4 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay in the wild card chase.
The Red Sox could be interested in DeJesus as a veteran leadoff hitter and someone who could play left and center should Jacoby Ellsbury not be ready to play everyday as he returns from his rib injury.
| Giants eyeing hitters | 07.21.10 at 3:23 pm ET |
Sources have told Jon Morosi of Fox Sports that the Giants have been monitoring some bats. Among the hitters the team covet are Nationals’ slugger Adam Dunn, Marlins infielder Jorge Cantu, Royals outfielder David DeJesus and Brewers outfielder Corey Hart.
Jon Heyman of SI.com tweets the team is also looking at Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista, who leads the league in homers.
The Giants, currently second in the NL West with a 52-42 record, trail the Padres by three games. They are currently 15th in the majors in homers (85) and 19th in RBI (394).
| DeJesus too costly? | 07.15.10 at 2:28 pm ET |
Though the Red Sox are reported to have interest in Royals outfielder David DeJesus, Alex Speier wrote earlier this week that the Royals are asking for an awful lot in return. One of the bigger reasons a DeJesus deal figures to be costly for whomever trades for him is the fact that he himself is not all that expensive.
The outfielder, who began the year batting leadoff but has been a No. 3 hitter since Scott Podsednik took over the leadoff spot in mid-May, comes with a relatively cheap price tag. He is making just $4.7 million this season, and his contract includes a club option for $6 million next year. That’s pretty cheap money for a guy who is currently hitting .326 with a .395 on-base percentage and a .758 OPS.
