AROUND THE WEB:

♦ Rangers president Nolan Ryan announced Monday that the team will install a bronze statue outside Rangers Ballpark honoring Shannon Stone, the 39-year-old firefighter who fell to his death after catching a ball at a game last month. The statue will depict Stone and his 6-year-old son, Cooper, at the park.

“I got to thinking about what we as an organization could do, and I felt like this was only appropriate,” Ryan said. “I want fans, when they come in, to see it and remember Shannon and Cooper, and also the fact that they represent what I think we’re about. That’s making memories for our fans.”

Said Jenny Stone, Shannon’s widow: “Our hope is that this statue will not be a symbol of our family tragedy but rather a reminder of the importance of a family’s love — love of each other, love of spending time together, and love of the game.”

♦ The Marlins recently demoted Logan Morrison to Triple-A, apparently due in part to his outspoken manner. Morrison is fond of using Twitter and other formats to speak his mind about team matters. At Yahoo! Sports, Jeff Passan laments that outspoken baseball players are a dying breed.

Peter Raaymakers at SB Nation admits to enjoying hockey fights, but after the recent deaths of former enforcer Bob Probert at 45 and Rangers brawler Derek Boogaard at 29, he’s questioning whether he should. Writes Raaymakers: We nevertheless ask these people to make massive sacrifices to their mental and physical health purely for our entertainment.

Real Clear Sports has a list of the top 10 most memorable NFL holdouts. No. 2 is the 1977 holdout of Patriots linemen John Hannah and Leon Gray. No. 1 is top overall pick Bo Jackson passing on the Buccaneers in 1986 and playing baseball until re-drafted the following year by the Raiders.
