Singer Terry Cashman to be honored by Baseball Hall of Fame 03.18.11 at 12:54 pm ET
By Jerry Spar   |  1 Comment

Terry Cashman, the composer and singer of “Talkin’ Baseball,” will be honored by the Baseball Hall of Fame this year, the 30th anniversary of his signature song.

Cashman, a former minor league pitcher in the Tigers organization (under his real name, Dennis Minogue), had some success as a composer and producer before his 1981 baseball classic that paid tribute to New York icons “Willie [Mays], Mickey [Mantle] and the Duke [Snider].”

“‘Talkin’ Baseball’ symbolizes the spirit of New York baseball in the 1950s and ’60s and the timeless love for the national pastime for every baseball fan whose enjoyed Terry’s ballad over the years,” Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson said Friday. “We are pleased to honor Terry and his classic tribute to the game and its great players.”

Cashman performed a Boston version of his song as part of the Red Sox’ World Series championship celebration on Opening Day in 2005. He called in to WEEI’s The Big Show to defend himself after being criticized for it.

Friendship is strong, but the burger is stronger! 01.12.09 at 2:00 pm ET
By Carlson Mozdiez   |  1 Comment

Those savvy Burger King marketers are at it again. A few weeks back, LEEINKS blogged about the new Burger King fragrance. Well, now the self-proclaimed king of burgers wants to know if you are willing to part ways with ten of your facebook friends for a free Whopper. The “Whopper Sacrifice” Facebook app, which launched on Wednesday, asks users to choose 10 Facebook friends they won’t mind losing from their profiles. Once they’ve put those 10 expendable friends to the torch—literally, their profile photos can be set ablaze—Burger King will send a coupon redeemable for a free Whopper at participating restaurants. UPDATE: Facebook Burns BK “Whopper Sacrifice”.

Facebook marketing continues to explode like Willis McGahee’s knee in the BCS title game. For example, check out today’s column by Jessica Camerato on One Fan’s Push to Send Scal to Phoenix for the NBA All-Star Game. No disrespect to Scal, who played a great game in Toronto on Sunday (7 points, 2 Rebounds, and 6 fouls in 25 minutes), but he won’t be joining the Big 3 in Phoenix.

So when you are on Facebook deleting those ten facebook for a Whopper, be sure to join the WEEI Fan Page or add a WEEI Content Widget to your page!

The new uniforms are in, but the jury is still out 12.12.08 at 12:00 pm ET
By Carlson Mozdiez   |  10 Comments

The new Red Sox uniforms are being called “retro roadies” by the folks over on Yawkey Way. Does that not sound like a fantastic cover band or what? Or perhaps a wedding band? Regardless, the uniforms are causing quite a stir among hardcore members of Red Sox Nation. Here are some of the early returns on the “retro roadies”:

So what is your take on the new uniforms? Vote on the poll below, leave a comment, or do both because it’s Friday and you are no doubt reading this entry to kill time before 5pm.

Are you ok with the Red Sox adding this new alternate uniform?

Sean Avery’s news-making comments 12.03.08 at 2:49 pm ET
By Carlson Mozdiez   |  5 Comments

Don’t know who Sean Avery is? Well, apparently he REALLY wants you to know who he is. Before we get to what he said, lets introduce you to Mr. Avery. His wikipedia bio and, for your viewing pleasure, a quick video below courtesy of SportsCentre in Canada (TSN).

Now that you know Avery. This is what he had to say this past Tuesday:

A few thoughts come to mind after watching and listening to these comments:

  • Premeditated?
  • This is great for the NHL because everyone is talking about these comments today in the US and Canada. The most pub since Wayne Gretzky’s wife got in trouble for gambling.

So what did our resident hockey experts on WEEI have to say about Sean Avery? Well, Dale Arnold described Avery as a “lunkhead” and as someone you didn’t want on your team. Dale also believes that Avery will only get a one or two game suspension from the NHL after he meets with the Commissioner.  Dale was fired up this morning, so take a listen the Dale & Holley Show as they give their thoughts and opinions on Sean Avery’s comments. Dale compared Avery to former NHL player Ken Linsemen. Finally, Dale & Michael talked about  pro teams and leagues getting “tough” on athletes who are not behaving and acting properly.

How will this situation play out? This from Jaime Aron, AP Sports Writer, “Avery was suspended indefinitely by commissioner Gary Bettman for making “inappropriate public comments, not pertaining to the game.” The punishment came down only hours after Avery used a crude term about his former girlfriends now dating other hockey players. Avery missed the Dallas Stars’ game against the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night. Because terms won’t be settled until Avery meets with Bettman, likely in New York, he almost certainly will be out again Wednesday night when the Stars play in Edmonton.“  CLICK HERE for the complete AP Story on Avery and his comments.
